Default Timing Belt

My 02 is coming up on 100,000 miles and was looking at the forum to check on timing belts and decided to pull the top bolt off the belt cover an see what I could see. It is black and fairly shiny, showing little wear. question is what color and consistency does an orig have? And what valve is it that has a tendency to break if it is not loosened when a new belt is installed, and where is it located? Wondering if I need to think about this. THX GEO.

mine still had yellow lettering on it and looked pretty good, well, other than the place it snapped.

there is no valve to break. the tensioner controls the belt tension and that gets replaced at the same time, it should be included in the kit.

hope this helps

-mine snapped when i hit the brake without enough time to push in the clutch. wheels locked up, motor stopped, valves tried to keep going.

Rob:

How many miles did you have on your car when the timing belt broke?

I know at 90K I am pushing it, but got to see about getting some dollars first. I might have to go another 2K or 3K miles first.

If the pt has been setting for long periods in it's life. I would be worried more. But if it was driven often and just not many miles, I would feel safer because of the dry rot issue. Rubber doesn't like to sit around. JMHO.

The belt on my son's 03 GT failed at about 93K about 2 months ago. No damage to anything else but his wallet. He didn't have his Timing Belt Fund started yet, he does now.
