The idle drops whenever the a/c compressor is engaged but the computer should compensate for the drop but normally you'll still feel a slight drop and back to normal as the A/C is working. If the idle is rough it could be a sign of the fan not working correctly to cool off the compressor and then it would cause a bigger strain on the engine. The radiator fan should be running whenever the A/C is turned on no matter if the compressor is currently on or off during it's cycling times.

Ok I just visually checked and the fan does run. I replaced the fan almost 2 years ago. Thanks and thanks again in advance for more trouble shooting

I am a new owner and I am experiencing the same thing. My car is a 05 and when the idle goes low the ac doesnt really blow that cold as soon as I just touch the gas it blows colder. I can't imagine this is the way it is supposed to be. Looking forward to more feedback as I continue to search the previous posts.

My 03 idles pretty smooth and the idle is the same as your pic.
An over charge of the AC freon could cause higher pressure and rough idle
When was your last plug change?

You need to check your cooling fan to make sure it go to higher speed with the AC on.
If the fan is working properly freon could be a little low (Don't Over charge)

To the original poster...what finally worked? I have recently started having the same issues. Charged the ac last summer, just replace the plugs, wires, battery, radiator cap and filters. Never had this issue before.
Does great on the freeway, totally normal. But city driving seems to be my problem.
Going to replace the thermostat tomorrow. The fan comes on....I'm stumped and out of $$$

Is it possible that doing the key dance would show an error code for these problems?

Yes, & I have a hunch it will be an oxygen sensor.

My 2004 (non-turbo) just started this too... At stoplights w/AC on, idle goes down/up, down/up, like it wants to stall and AC starts blowing hot. The engine does stall sometimes. Everything is fine when I start moving again in city driving and no problems on the highway.
I brought this all to the attention of my trusted Chrysler dealer service shop, and they did not fix it. My PT has been very well maintained (wires, plugs, throttle body, etc.) and has 113,000 miles on it. Based on what you all have been suggesting, I will point them in the direction of the fan speed issue and the idle air control valve next week. It's pretty hot here in Maryland right now.

Thanks.
