Default 2003 PT Cruiser Classic Timing Belt Issues

Hi Guys! I am really in need of some input/expertise. My husband has a 2003 PT Classic that just rolled up on 90,000 miles. He was driving uphill when the car just stopped running. After some diagnostics, it was determined that it is the timing belt. We are not sure if it broke or if there are teeth sheered off at this point as it hasn't actually gone to the shop yet. We were quoted about $475 to fix this (my hubby has a mechanic he regular uses), but he was warned that there is a 50/50 chance that the valves are bent which would be an additional $1500 - $2000. What I am asking is what are the chances and what can we do at home to test to see if there is a valve issue? I ask because we can do the $500, but not the possible $2500 it could cost. Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

WEll the real question is this
Was your hubby getting on it going up hill (high RPMs???)
and even if he was the valvues CAN NOT HIT THE PISTONS
NO matter what any one says the PT 2.4 is a NON INTERFERANCE ENGIN
We have had to many members argur this but the bottoem line is NON INTERFERANCE ENGIN
With that said there is 1 small glich

However the valvues can hit each other IF the belt snaps at high Revs

ID say 9 out of 10 times there is NO danamage at all do the belt and drive it home
and to be honest if you can get a $1000 job done for less than half it might not be a bad ide to do a head gasket since you are already in the neigherbood

A head gasket and head job should not be more than another $500 sp add your $475 adn you are under a grand for a head/valvue timing belt water pump and tensioners which I hope they are doing all of them
you can not check for bent valves with out removing the head ( or I dont think you can)

Welcome to the forum.

First, $475 is really cheap if you can get someone to do the timing belt change for that. Usually, a dealer charges about $900 to $1200 depending on the hourly labor rate. It take 5 to 7 hours of labor without parts. You should also change the belt tensioner and water pump while doing the belt.

Second. The PT is a Non-Interference engine which means the valves won't hit the piston tops when the belt breaks BUT the opposing free floating valves can hit each other if the PT happens to be at high speed. Of ALL the owners that came to the forum with a broken belt, I've only seen two that had any internal damage, so the chances are, you'll be OK.

....you type faster than me Dad.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the input. They would replace the water pump and all that. I will tell him to have it towed today and hopefully it will be good as new soon.

Thanks again!

Hope money isn't to tight beacuse at 90,000 your probably not far from replacing the thermostat, idler on the tensioner lfor the accessory belts, and radiator cooling fan.
It would be the cheapest to do as most all these parts will be off anyway while changing the timing belt, water pump and tensioner.

By the way I bought a PT CRuiser with a bad belt and the belt had lost about 15 cogs (teeth) and I did a compression test and only had one good cylinder.
