i think i heard someone mention that even new they can sometimes be garbage.

try exchanging for another new one
or
re-inspect your work paying closer attention to the mating surfaces and alignment
or
use a little permatex on there. i used ultrablack because it say ultra and it's black. the orange is ugly and the blue is soft.

The new one isn't cracked,or the new one is the one that cracked?
If your trying to install one that's already been cracked....You need to replace it.
Remove, clean T-stat housing, install new gasket,T-stat,and T-stat housing(NOT cracked!),finger tighten both bolts evenly, then alternate tightening the bolts to 110 Inch/Lbs(NOT!-Ft.Lbs),then sit back and enjoy beverage of choice.

Every one of those water necks are severely corroded, both where it mates to the head and where the t-stat seats.

yes of course i didnt try to reuse the cracked one, haha. its a new one. thanks for the ideas, ill try messing with it again it does not appear to be leaking at all from the mating surfaces however, its literally coming up through the back bolt. thanks for all the replies!

The first time I changed the thermostat I almost put the gasket in wrong. While I had the rubber gasket in my hand and trying to figure out if it went under or over the thermostat, It dawned on me that the gasket was slit, C-shaped and so went ON the thermostat. Installed properly it should seal both above and below the thermostat. There should be no leaks at all.

I vaguely remember something about a square notch or tab with some of the gaskets and/or thermostats, but I don't remember the details.

yeah theres a notch in the housing and a tab to match in the gasket. it fit in very nicely, with the thermostat sitting in the slit of it. thats what i found strange, because its not leaking from the seal where the two pieces meet. that seems to be fine. its coming up from the rear bolt! :/ are the bolts the same size? i dropped and lost one, i brought the one i still had to the store to match it. the old one is the one i put in the back, thats leaking, the replacement bolt i put in front seems to have no issue.
