Default 2006 PTC Transmission Control Module --Undervolt

Thanks ahead of time to whomever takes the time to read this and can possibly provide some constructive advice. I have a 2006 P.T. GT Cruiser Convertible. The car only has a shade under 45,000 miles. Awhile ago my wife was driving the car and the check engine light came. She immediately noticed that the rpm were going up and that the car wasn't shifting after about 30 mph. I later learned that the car was in limp mode. For a few months the car sat in the garage because we didn't have the cash to take it in for a comprehensive diagnostic. All I could do was have the CEL checked at a local auto parts store. I don't recall the exact code he gave me but I recall it started with a 7 and he said it was something like Transmission Control Power Module Undervolt. As the car sat in the garage for a few months I was pretty good about starting the engine up every 4-5 days to keep the battery charged. Over Christmas I was pretty busy and I just plain forgot to do this. Ironically I had finally had enough money to get the car looked at by a local Chrysler dealer and when I went to check the battery the night before the appointment I found out that the battery was completely dead. I used a portable jumper and got the battery going and the car started. I immediately noticed that the CEL was off. I drive the car for about 30 miles and it acted perfect. I cancelled the appointment and kept driving the car for over a month before the CEL came back on. During this time I had read forums like this one and I found that a lot of people with similar errors recommend disconnecting the battery and stepping on the brake to "reset" whatever was going wrong. At no time when the CEL was off did I hear, feel or experience any problem with the transmission. At first I was resetting a few times a month. It quickly became every week and then a few times a week. Before I take it in and I'm possibly told it will cost $1000s to fix there are a few questions I hope someone can answer.

If this is just a problem with a module and not the transmission what would be a ballpark price to get it fixed? Are Transmission Control Modules (TCM) expensive to replace? Are there any alternatives IF it's the TCM and it's too console? Is this a common problem?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. It's not a common problem but owners have had to replace the TCM. You need to buy one (around $250) exactly for your car and after installation it needs to be taken (to the dealer?) to have it calibrated to your car. Can't say exactly if that's your whole problem but that CEL did point to that. The dealer always charges more (especially for labor) than anyone else so shop around for a better price.

Here's an older thread that might explain more.....

is the tcm same as transmission Solenoid?
