Default overheating, is the fan come on without the a/c on ?

2001 pt, overheated on my daughter the other day on the highway......let it idle today and the fan never comes on even as it is getting hot. I read a few threads here saying the low speed should come on wirn the a/c is turned on.....does it ever come on with the a/c off ?

it looks like the connector is broken at the a/c compressor, nso the a/c does not work.......

Just have to say....my boss had a new 01 and it was a great car......after owning/working on this one, and reading all the problems.......i am regretting buying this thing

Welcome to the forum.

Over heating is a common problem and probably 50% or more is due to the radiator fan. To answer your question, YES, the fan has two speeds and should first come on low speed when the coolant heats up and then switch to high speed as it heats up further. If the connector to the fan is broken, that could be all you need to stop it form overheating.

Check the fan relays and fuses, there are two relays. I have had to replace the relay in my duaghters 2001 also had to replac ethe fan motor as the low speed side was not working. Fan should come on when engine gets up to temp without the AC on.
