Cool Brake Grinding 2004 PT cruiser

We have a 2004 PT, purchased new, with 97,000 miles. At about 94,000 miles there developed a grinding noise from the left front when brakes applied. Pads and rotors looked good so we took it to favorite wrench who agreed there was a noise. He could not find the cause but surfaced the rotors with no improvements, so we took it to another favorite wrench who recommended rotors and semi-metallic pads. This cured the noise.....for about a month and noise is back with a vengeance.

BTW the pads that were on the car when the noise came were semi-metallic w/about 25,000 miles and looked good.

The noise is like worn out pads metal on metal, and is not constant but like there is a bad spot, ie rump, rump rump.

HELP pls.

Sounds like a wheel bearing by your description.

Is there any vibration in the brake pedal when you stop?
Sounds like what a bad wheel bearing could sound like, but new disks/pads wouldn't cure a bearing noise - even for a while.
Maybe a brake pad hanging up?
Does tapping the brake pedal change the noise?
