Default Cooling Fan Woes

My first post under this user name, been here before.
This one is crazy. My PT started to overheat on local roads, highway
travel at a steady speed is OK, right in the middle. I did some research
and things pointed to the fan. I was able to get the fan assembly out
after some struggling and colorful language. Started the motor and let
it heat up, no fan. Couldn't get the connector undone so I striped some
insulation and did a direct to the battery. There are three wires on the
fan side, two blue, one black. I assumed black was ground. Positive
wire to the right blue wire, negative to the black. The fan spun but the
wire got red hot. Next, positive to the left blue wire, negative to the
black...nothing.
So, what is it? Relays, fan motor, something else? I would like to have
an idea before I start replacing stuff. Finally got the connector undone,
the release tab was gone.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response.
The high speed wire ran the fan when jumped to the battery. The low speed wire never ran when jumped. Neither low or high speeds run when the engine is hot.

I believe the high speed fan only runs when the A/C is on.
Your going to either have to buy a new fan or hotwire the high to run all the time...but I don't know how long that will last.

The high speed will run without the A/C. You just have to have the coolant hot enough so the ECT tells the computer to turn it on.

Then you possibly have another problem either with the ECT, relay or computer.
