Default 05 PT Overheating at idle and in traffic

So I'm working on my mother's 2005 PT, and originally it started overheating, and I thought it had a thermostat go bad, so I replaced it. Not quite 3 weeks later, it threw a thermostat code check engine light, and began to overheat again, so since the thermostat was under warranty, I replaced it again. Now the car runs fine as long as you're driving and keeping air flowing, but if you're doing a lot of stop-and-go through lights or traffic, or sitting at idle, it will overheat.

I thought it might be the fan not working properly after reading some of the articles on this site, but when I went to check the low speed fan function by turning the A/C on, it seems to still be working properly.

What else could be wrong?

She also just informed me that yesterday, it would heat up while she was driving, and then cool back down when she was sitting still. The exact opposite of what it did to me last week....

While driving the engine produces more heat and the water pump makes the coolant flow faster around the system to keep it cool. The radiator fan cuts off at about 35mph as there should be enough air coming through the front. If there's some sort of blockage, that flow of coolant isn't making it around like it should. You possibly have a partially clogged radiator.

Start with thermostat. It could be acting up.

Radiator cap would be a good idea too.

Is there a way I can test the radiator before buying another one?

Ive already put 2 thermostats in it, but can try another one. And I'll look into trying the radiator cap also.

Might not/probably not have to buy a new radiator unless it's completely rusted and clogged and if you can't do it yourself, your neighborhood garage will flush your system out for not too much ca$h.

That statement is actually just a tad confusing.
Normally, turning on the A/C is to check for 'High' speed fan operation.....

I'd just like to confirm; You're sure your cooling fan has both High & Low speeds functions?
