Default 2002 5 speed clutch help

2002 Touring, 5 speed, 123,000 miles. Hard to shift for several weeks, some fluid leaking around master cylinder. Figured it was time to overhaul. Put on a new clutch assembly, throw out bearing, master cylinder (worst part) and slave cylinder. Still no joy. What is the disk on a bracket inline between the Master cyl. quick release and the slave cyl? I'm guessing some kind of regulator. It's a dealership item and you have to special order since they just want to sell you the slave cylinder direct to the quick release without the disk/regulator thing. It appears to only have been installed on 2001-2005. I ordered the original part rather than the service replacement, but I want to know what the disk/regulator thing is. Confused in Texas - thanks in advance.
