Default P-0551 code

Thank you for all the help on this valuable forum.

I am on a trip and half way to my destination my check engine light came on and the P-0551 code came on. I stopped at an auto parts store and was assured that I could continue to my destination. That it would just be very difficult to turn if the power steering pump went out.

I'm 400 miles from home and reading through other threads this would be the power steering pressure switch which they^^^ had also indicated. Before I go to a dealership to have this fixed I want to be prepared to know a little bit about what they are talking about and how to proceed.

Any ideas as to what I am looking at for cost for this repair.

So any thoughts or suggestions are most appreciated.

It may have been a momentarty problem and might take several cold to hot trips to clear it self, so don't be in a rush.
Check fluid level.
Could also be the need to flush the power steering fluid or a
broken or loose wire or the sensor which signals the ECM to up the idle when your turning (Under load)

Faulty Power Steering Pressure Sensor
- Power Steering Pressure Sensor harness is open or shorted
- Power Steering Pressure Sensor circuit poor electrical connection

Help with Possible causes What does this mean?

When is the code detected?

An out of range voltage from the Power Steering Pressure Sensor is sent to Engine Control Module (ECM).

Possible symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Power steering inoperative

P0551 Chrysler Description
Power steering pressure (PSP) sensor is installed to the power steering high-pressure tube and detects a power steering load. This sensor is a potentiometer which transforms the power steering load into output voltage, and emits the voltage signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM controls the electric throttle control actuator and adjusts the throttle valve opening angle to increase the engine speed and adjusts the idle speed for the increased load.

Lots of owners have had to change out the switch after getting the code to fix the problem. It's not a hard job but very messy.

Thank you for the responses. I am so glad the hotel has a computer to access help from you kind folks.

Have lots of a stuff going on this weekend - wedding rehearsal, wedding, helping my son and his fiance and others with preparations.

Is this something that is best done this weekend or can it wait until I get home?

As was said: if the pump or switch did go out, it would be extremely hard to steer but could be done. I drove that way (went the pump went out) for several days until I could get it to the dealers (under warranty). The hardest is "trying to turn" if the car isn't moving. Almost impossible but as long as the car is moving the wheels can be turned. That's if the pump goes out and your code is the pressure switch which might have it act the same way, not sure.

See if you can have someone get under the car and disconnect/connect the electrical connector and check for any signs of leaks. Might be that the connector could be loose?

Since this relates to the sensor, I believe you should have no issue mechanically with the steering itself. Just the engine light. The pump can't be shut down by the computer. So you should have no problem with the drivability. JMTC

First of all -- thanks for all the help guys.

Thought I better stop in and update...

...decided to wait until back home to take care of it.

Well the check engine light went from constant on to intermittent on to now off all the time.

So I cancelled doing anything at all with it for now -- it is all so complicated for a number of reasons
