Default Swap 2001 2.4L Engine into Newer body

We have a 2001 PT Cruiser 2.4l base model. Just wrecked it and the insurance wants to total it. Replacement engine is still under warranty.

Idea is to find a newer PT with a bad engine and "upgrade" to a limited or something better.

Anyone know what is the max year you can go UP from the 2001??

Thanks

2005 I believe, 2006-2010 has the can bus installed & wouldn't be compatible electrically.

actually thans not right its like 01-02 they changed the egr or something like that so relaly unless you are willing to do a lot of modding I think its like a 03 uptown or nitro can tell you exactally what years will fit

The crank sensor on the 2001 and 2002 engines are very different from the 2003 and newer PT engines and are not interchangeable. And these early sensors do not talk to the PSU in the same way the later ones do. It's much more of a difference than just sensor position. The crankshaft and crank sensor wheel are different too. There is no viable way (short of some very complex electrical engineering) to mate the early 2001 and 2002 engine up with a 2003 or later PT electrical system.

And to answer your questions directly, you can likely fit your 2001 engine in a 2002 PT. But not newer. For the EGR difference between the 2001 and 2002 (most 2002 PT's have no EGR valve), you can likely just leave the EGR on the 2001 engine. In a 2002 PT, there will just be nothing to plug the EGR sensor into. Everything will likely work fine like that. You just may not know if the EGR valve goes bad. And they don't go bad often.

2003 and Newer PT Engine

You can go 03 t0 05 Or even newer if you change everything like wiring computer, everything. Other wise 02 is the limit.

Okay everyone thanks for the info. I'm gonna get busy finding a nice 2002 with a blown engine to rescue. Our 2001 base model is not very nice anyway.

Yep.

I'm sure there's some variability with all this "common knowledge".

There's no shame in a 2001 Limited either. The 2001 PT has a few features usually not seen in the later PT's.

Your opinion is not biased in any way is it?

We are open to a 2001 just finding the right one that has not been abused is the hard part.

What features does the 2001 have that the late models do not?
