Default how to tell if...

how do determine if the turbo seals are blowing oil??

I have a 2004 limited with turbo...
I got 2 turbos from a guy in SC for $60,
I have a rebuild kit and can do it...

1 turbo was practically new, 50 miles before
they through a rod...the other had a bent
shaft...both appear to be in very good condition...
I am unfamiliar with turbo cars...

The car is new to me, it was blowing smoke
when I bought it and knew it needed a new
turbo.

I have not done a compression test yet,
what would be 'normal' compression for
a turbo engine with about 110k miles??

or any other ideas, blowing a lot of smoke...
thanks

Yes just pull one end of the hose and block of the end going to the intake. Also you can pull the end of the intake hose off the turbo ( while cool Of course) and check how much play in the shaft. In and out should be none. Side to side you should no be able to touch the side wall with the impeller. You could also unbolt the top oil cine on the turbo to see if it is clogging up with coking. If the line has build up, then turbo is already starving the rear bearing of oil and needs to be rebuilt.

REBUILDING THE TURBO!!!!

DOING ANOTHER TURBO

Your camera phone is your friend to remember the alignment of the nut and shaft line up on the front impeller.

thanks for the info...I will start with the pvc.

I had the engine out of the car, changed all the tranny seals
and replaced the timing belt and water pump.

Again I replaced the turbo...so I did check the
oil line, it has been replaced with the twin metal
ends with hose in between...so no coking
that I could tell.

I will have to search for pics of the vacuum lines...
just to make sure I have them correct too

Any ideas what would be good compression??

Well, I got lucky...

It must have been extra oil residue in the exhaust system.

I had gotten a radiator stop leak...new radiator with a leak,
don't blame me...I bought that way.

Anyway, I let it idle for about 30 minutes...still smoking
when I turned it off...but the engine was up to normal
operating temp when I decided the stop leak was not the
answer.

I ordered a new radiator from RockAuto...still waiting on
it to be delivered, slowest part ever!! I have always gotten
parts ALOT quicker in the past.

Anyway, my son came over and I wanted to show him it was
running...and NO SMOKE, at all...SO, it must have burnt itself
out of the exhaust system.

So...my $1200 04 turbo limited is just about on the road...

Thanks everyone
