Revving a little too high & not dropping quickly
I have just bought my neighbours 02 2L non turbo cruiser as a run about due to my saab bring involved in an accident and I'm pleasently surprised how good it is, The main thing that's stumping me with the car is that the revvs dont drop as quick as I'd expect when pressing the clutch, I've removed and cleaned the throttle body and all the sensors but it's still the same, It ticks over when warm at 1000rpms which i thinks a little high i'd expect it to be around 800rpms so what do you think could be causing it to not drop it's revs ?

Re: Revving a little too high & not dropping quickly
Welcome to the forum. You might want to try cleaning or replacing the IAC (Idle Air Controller). It comes apart for cleaning or just replace it. That has a lot to do with your idle and how the dropping of the revs.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../IACMarked.jpg The other sensor is the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) which can't be cleaned, only replaced. Both sensors are by the Throttle Body. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...Photos/TPS.jpg The other thing: In the first picture are two wires running across the top of the engine. One is the Cruise Control, the other is the Throttle Cable. Make sure both wires are (sort-of) tight (not too much slack) and that the wheel that they are attached to is working freely. |
Re: Revving a little too high & not dropping quickly
Thank you for the prompt reply, I did remove and clean the Idle Air Controller but to no avail along with map sensor so I'll replace it and the TP sensor and see how we go.
Edit. It doesnt look like i have a cruise control as i only have the 1 wire .. Thanks Again |
Re: Revving a little too high & not dropping quickly
do not replace the TPS sensor, check it with a multimeter first.

Re: Revving a little too high & not dropping quickly
with the car off but key in the run position, it should be 0.6v at idle, 4.5v when fully open. measure from the orange wire to the black wire
also, make sure you have the AC off while you're troubleshooting your idle issue. |
Re: Revving a little too high & not dropping quickly
Still waiting for my Dad to bring his Multimeter which hopefully will be tomorrow.
Something else worth mentioning is that there's a savage or hard hesitation/jerk when sometimes accelerating. But anyway thanks for the help I'll report back tomorrow |
Re: Revving a little too high & not dropping quickly
Rob, I've checked it with the meter and it seems the numbers are correct ..
Slightly stumped now .. |
Re: Revving a little too high & not dropping quickly
Some cable lubricant on the throttle cable? Can't hurt.
Is aircon on? A/C keeps idle high, and remember that defog (defrost) brings on A/C also. |
