Default ECM replacement

I have a 06 pt cruiser and I think my ecm is bad. If I buy a used on with
the same model number on the ecm will it work without having to be programmed?

No. Three things must match Security key, ECM, SKIM Module. If you put it in, the SKIM (SECURITY KEY IMmobilizer) will let it start 3 times for about a second or two and shut off. After the third time it will not even try and the little red security light on the cluster will say on.

You probably can get get a used on reprogrammed at the dealer but if its bad you will pay for the service anyway.
I just ordered one from Florida, year guarante, and they are plug and play.
Should have it on Friday.
What seems to be the problem with your suspected bad ECM

Thanks for the info and you may have hit on my problem. The car will only start and run about a second then die. Also the little red light on the dash started coming on at the same time. It flashes no matter which key I use. I may have caused this problem by disconnecting the ecm to check for bad connections

I don't believe you can reset the security by disconnecting the the battery as you can reset the ECU doing the same.

Both of my keys work to unlock the doors but when i go to start
the engine it will start but stops after about 2 sec. I have also noticed
that the red light on dash flashes as soon as i insert the key and turn
the ignition on. Any help would really be appreciated

That sounds like a problem with the anti-theft SKIM system.

When you start the engine, the ECM checks to see if the key in the ignition has the right chip number. If not, it shuts the engine down after about 2 seconds. If you are using the correct original key and the original ECM, then the likely culprit is often the SKIM sensor mounted on the steering column.

But first, is this what it does with the original ECM or with a replacement? If it's with a replacement ECM, then that ECM likely needs to be reprogrammed.

Was your PT starting okay with this same key before the problem started? Please restate what the original problem initially was and what you have done. And do you have any trouble codes?

If you are not using an original key, you are wasting your time. The new key will have to be programed into the ECM. If you have two original keys, you may be able to do it yourself to create a third key. Otherwise, you must go to a dealership or a locksmith with the right equipment. For just making a new key, ECM "reprogramming" is not usually required. Instead, someone must have the right interface and software to initiate the key programming sequence in the ECM from the OBDII port. Some of the better locksmiths have this since they end up making a lot of keys for Chryslers from the mid 2000's.
