Default Help with upper torque strut

I have two issues regarding the upper torque strut in my wife's PT Cruiser. First, watch the video below so you can see what I'm talking about.

How to remove your upper mount on your PT Cruiser - YouTube

First, her car is completely missing the (horizontal) bolt that attaches the strut to that front bracket (which has the two 15mM bolts attaching it to the engine). Does anyone know the specifications of that bolt? Believe it or not, the dealerships I went to were completely useless in providing me that information.

Second, the 18mM (vertical) bolt that attaches the strut to the bracket on the car frame simply will not come out. It just spins and spins. Using a mirror, it looks like there was a nut somehow attached to the bottom of the bracket that was used to self tighten the bolt. Apparently, that nut has come detached from the bracket and is attached to the bolt in between the strut and the bracket. Any one ever encounter that problem and have a remedy for it? I'm assuming I'll have to remove that whole rear bracket from the body.

Thanks.

Is the front, horizontal bolt missing or broken off? I don't remember the back, vertical bolt/bracket having a nut that could possibly break lose. Do you know the history of who/what/when anything may have been changed or messed with? All this makes me wonder if perhaps something was halfassed along the way.

If you have a buddy with a Cruiser you can compare and measure or you can swing by a junkyard and get the correct bolt(s).

That front bolt is missing. It must have wormed its way loose. No idea how long she's been driving around with it unattached. We had a mechanic replace all the torque struts a few years ago, but I've decided to do it myself this time around. Already replaced the lower torque strut and trans mount. This upper one, however, is proving to be problematic.

And no, I don't know the history of the car. Looking in the mirror for that rear vertical bolt, I can see the hole on the bottom of the bracket where the bolt goes through, and behind that hole, you can clearly see what looks like a nut on the bolt. And when I go to loosen it, the whole thing just spins around and around.

If you can't get to it with a wrench or vice grips you'll to remove the bracket. Have to repair anyway. There is a procedure to setting up the mounts when installing. So will need to losses the other one at that time. Looks like someone left that bolt loose last time b

Hello, I also have an issue with engine mounts, my plan is to replace them over the weekend, I received them today as well as the torque mount inserts but what I do not understand is:
1. Am I supposed to make holes to get the inserts in? See picture.
2. There is no way in this world I can make the insert fit the upper mount. See picture

So, here's a visual of the second problem I'm having with that rear vertical bolt of the upper torque strut not coming out. It's kind of a crummy picture because I'm taking a picture of the bolt reflected in a mirror but I've highlighted parts of it via photoshop:

The blue is the bottom of the bolt. The red is the nut. And the green is the hole in the bottom of the bracket that's attached to the car frame. I am assuming that the nut should be wedged (welded?) into that green hole to keep in place for when you need to tighten or loosen the bolt. As you can see, it's actually BEHIND that part of the bracket.

Here's an undoctored photo, if that helps:

Wifes compact? She might beat the crap out of you. You can either try to get a wrench on it or pull the whole bracket and repair it while it's out.

Yup. Her compact, but she gave it to me to use. It was a gift and not her color. . Space between the bracket and mount is too narrow to get any wrenches that I own in there. I'm thinking I may have to take out the whole bracket. The front bolt of that bracket will be a bitch with the strut still in place because the air conditioning tubes are in the way.

That bolt head on the left side? That's the vertical bolt in question. The silver thing underneath it is the (very washed out) torque strut. The black bracket extends off to the left and as you can see, the silver air conditioning tubes run right over where I have to get to in order to undo the bolt holding that bracket in place. Ratsinfratsinnogooddirty...

Oh, and that red thing at the bottom is just my flashlight.

It's always good that we get thing on the good side of the boss lol. Somehow I was thinking some of the bolts in that bracket were accessed from the wheelwell. Great job on getting the pics.
