Oh, it matters. 1 will be at the timing belt end.

Of the numerous head cores we have inspected only a few camshaft caps were clearly marked from Chrysler.

The proper procedure is to mark them as your service that area.

The only thing you can do if they are not clearly marked at this point is carefully look for matching wear marks between the head and the cap. If this can not be done than inspect them for excessive wear.

If there is only a mild scoring you can either use them as they are or clean any slight irregularities a little with 1000 or 1200 wet sand paper. DO NOT get carried away.

The PT Cruiser gets plenty of oil on the top end of the engine to the point that there is even a restrictor available form a Performance aftermarket parts supplier to limit the oil for high RPM use. It is doubtful that mixing the caps on the 2.4 as long as you carefully inspect them will cause any oil flow problems, binding or damage on the camshaft or head.

If you are really concerned you can always check for clearance with plastigage.

I recommend to look at a Chiltons, Haynes or Factory Service manual for how they are suppose to be positioned on the head.

these are marked but have 3 digit # 209 .In the book and service manual they have L 1-4 R 1-4.I wondering because the rebuilt head I got the #' are one way on some and turned around on others.
