Default Overheating

I have an '05 cruiser, 160,xxx miles and its been overheating lately, and I can actual hear the coolant bubbling and the tank for it shakes. I just had it "fixed" at the shop, they thought it was the radiator cap, so they replaced that but a week later it happened again, so what could be wrong? It has a lot that needs to be done anyways (about $2,000 in repairs, oil leak that would require them taking apart the entire engine, some belts are squeaky, etc). Is it even worth fixing at this point? I have had so many problems with this car.

I would suggest fixing the overheating issue first.

Is it overheating high speeds or low speeds only or both?

Does the high speed radiator fan kick in when you turn on the air conditioning when the engine is cold?

Was there any work done recently to the coolant system?

What kind of coolant are you putting in the radiator?

You would have to decide if the PT Cruiser is worth fixing. If you know how to do repairs on cars then your cost is much lower to get everything working right.

The first time it did this it would overheat sitting in traffic (turning the air on would bring the temp back down temporarily) the 2nd time I was traveling at a normal speed (45mph) when it started overheating again. Not sure what type of coolant we use and no work has been done to the coolant system, this is my first time having issues with it.

Also, I don't know if this is a common problem with PT cruisers (we have an 07 too) but with both the engine seems to struggle keeping up with the AC, the car will shake at red lights if I have the AC on and has trouble accelerating if AC is on, not sure if that is related or not though....

If you expect much more help I recommend actually joining the forum so to say!
If you agreed to the guidelines you must have read the first action from you might have been an introduction thread started by you!?

I can't tell you how it gets old new members joining only to first start a new thread about a well hashed over problem with dozens of threads all ready started to just continuing with asking questions without showing a true interest to the PT Cruiser and this forums community. If some of the new members just new a quick fix than use the search feature and spend you time not ours and help yourself. Or go take your troubled PT cruiser to a shop!
Try this!!!

PT problems read this FIRST

also go look this very similar question and thread just got started by yet another new member yesterday. This tell me that new members are not even taking time to look at the resent threads?

LOOK!!!

2004 PT 2.4L HO, overheating issues, help?

I would recommend you check to make sure your radiator low and high speed fan are both working. This is critical to keep your coolant system from overheating. Do you know how to check your radiator fan?

I would recommend checking both PT Cruisers on the radiator fan high and low speeds. Make sure they both work.

Your radiator fan when its working properly will come on & off as specified with the radiator fan operation chart that NitroPt has provided below in the next post. I would recommend checking for exhaust gases in your coolant system. Also recommend checking the radiator to make sure your radiator cores are not clogged restricting the coolant flow.

Thanks, it ended up being a leak in the head gasket, that combined with the other work it needs is more than I can afford, so it looks like this car is RIP. Thank you!
