Default When Is The Battery Light SUPPOSED To Come On?

Hi everyone:

When exactly is the Red Battery light in the instrument panel SUPPOSED to come on?

I ask because I have had a few dead batteries over the years and the battery light has never come on.

Is it supposed to come one when you have a bad battery? Or does it only come on when it detects a problem with the alternator or other charging system compononet failure?

Thanks in advance.

BTW: The battery light DOES come on briefly along with all the other instrument lights when you put the key in the ignition and turn to on, so it is not like the bulb is burned out or anything.

As long as the PT is charging the light won't come on.

Ahh.. Ok. So that means it will only come on if there is an alternator propblem (or broken wire or some other charging system problem).

Thanks.

Batterys in my Mopars only last about 3 years, maybe its the cold we get in the winter time. I've seen several DROF (read backwards) batterys last 6-7 years..

Good to know, JoeX;

While we don't get much cold weather where I am, I think I did my battery in with bad terminal connections.
