Default Is the timing belt broken?

A friend's Cruiser died on the Interstate about 75 miles from home. The local mechanic says the timing belt is broken but didn't tell her how he knows that.

I can think of a couple of ways to determine if the timing belt is in fact broken but what is the easiest way?

Also, is it or is it not an interference engine?

Pull the cam sensor and see if the magnet is turning.

Yes, 2 8mm bolts and lay it as side. Crank it over look in the hole and see if it turns.

{QUICK SIDE OF THE ROAD CHECK }listen to the RPMs when your cranking the engine over , faster than normal , its the belt , or , take a flat head screw driver slip in into the seam at the timming belt cover, [on top] and twist it open enough to see the belt , then have someone turn the engine over
