Default Grinding noise from engine

Hi all

I hope someone can help me. I have recently cleaned the intake manifold with intake/carb cleaner. The car sounded fine and ran fine after the treatment. I then drove about 60 miles with it, on the freeway. When I arrived home I noticed a grinding like noise from the engine that was not there before (almost sounds like when the brake pads are done and it's metal on metal). It only happens at idle. Sometimes it goes away for a while and then returns. It's not super loud, but it's definitely new and something wrong, in my opinion. The noise is consistent in nature. Does not sound like it's coming from a pully.

Two nights ago (same day I did the cleaning treatment) I stood at idle for a while trying to find the source of the noise. I then revved the engine slightly (perhaps to about 3000rpm) and heard a knocking noise, but I heard it only ONCE. Thereafter it ran normally again. However, right after hearing the knocking noise the car spat out a huge ball of smoke. And as I said, the car ran fine after that. There are no driveability issues, the power and response is what it usually is and there are no other noises from the engine. The knocking has not been heard ever since.

Yesterday the grinding noise was gone at startup and for quite some time. I then heard it again later in the day and it went away. Today I didn't hear it at all.

I trust that if I don't hear it anymore the issue is solved, but I am concerned it might not be. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused it? Specially with the knocking noise and smoke that one single time and then the engine running fine immediately thereafter.

I forgot to mention, I have a 2002 model 2.0L petrol.

What brand intake/carb cleaner did you use?

I live in South Africa so I am not sure if you would know the brand. I used Wynn's Carb cleaner. Don't know if that helps.

Ha ha. Sorry I should have mentioned... it is a 2002 model 2.0L Petrol. It has only about 30 000 miles on the clock. It has not really been worked on recently. I changed the coolant about a month ago. Besides that, it's only the intake and throttle body cleaning treatment that I did this weekend.

FYI

You should never use a carburetor cleaner in a system that is fuel injected.

Wynn's and other brands have specific cleaners for carburetor and another for fuel injection.

Sensors and other parts can be damaged with some carburetor cleaner used in a fuel injection system.

Always read the label there are some that can be used in both systems. Just be sure you get the correct cleaner for the fuel system you have.

All PT Cruisers are fuel injected.

I have read somewhere that this could be used, but I guess I must have been misinformed. I hope the engine will be fine though. I haven't heard that grinding noise again and it has been 5 days since.

I am hearing a annoying grinding noise from by 2002 Turbo which sounds like it is coming from behind and below the glove box; my P.T has 175,000 miles on it, and I have it in the shop today getting a compression test and TB inspection done. It almost sounds like some type of bearing going out, and I am thinking water pump. It sounds louder when the engine is cold, but still persists after heating up. Time to dump my P.T., or stick with it ? The garage just called and the engine compression is 175-175-170-165. It is a "grinding" noise.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't hear the water pump grind...it could be the alternator.

maybe a slightly bent or sticky valve that keeps rotateing around from good to bad
, and now it drops a bit of oil thruogh the motor hence smoke,
keep an eye on oil consumption,
