Default a/c heater problems!

New to site. Have a 2004, my a/c went out and was going to wait till spring to fix. My problem is when I turn control for where to have air/heat ,hard to turn and will not let it go to windshield. But also when I turn on fan to any speed, the a/c engages ( the compressor is locked up) and car dies. Should the compressor be engaging with heat on? Thanks

If you aim control at windshield, that's defrost, and yes, defrost turns on the A/C.

If the control is hard to turn, STOP! The control cable is binding and further use may break the control or panel.

I recommend to pull the dash cover and find the binding problem first.

You may need to unplug the AC clutch connector until you repair your AC system so the compressor is not engaged.
