Default battery question

We took a week trip and while gone I hooked up the battery to charge for the car in storage . The charger was on 'float charge' . When I got back I could smell the sulferic gas. Question is........if water is way down then .putting water in and charging is of no use, the battery is shot. Correct?

Using a volt meter check voltage.

Replenish the fluid and recheck voltage.

You may need to have the battery load tested.

IMO based on your description, you cooked you battery!

Sorry but I agree with Nitro. I think you cooked it. You can fill it and try but don't bet on it. It might work ok now but I would bet first deep freeze of winter and you will be S.O.L.

Agree, but nothing to lose by trying - you must use distilled water - get it at a supermarket for steam irons.

Thanks guys, it is shot only 10 volts. Why would the battery have gotten cooked when it was on float charge?

are you sure it's a float charger and not a trickle charger? a float charger will automatically shut off when the battery is fully charged. a trickle charger won't.
