Default Error codes P1684/P1603/P0714/P0218

05 PT CRUISER 144k mi, base model automatic.

Days start, check oil, good, tranny fluid good, power steering little low, engine coolant reservoir dry. No action taken at the time

Driving down road started hearing a weird knocking, was a deeper noise, not high squeal whining or anything. Felt like car was a little off on power so thought maybe one of the cylinders was misfiring. Was watching temp gauge all day to see if it started overheating nothing.

Then a few more miles i noticed that i was at 3k rpm just to cruiser about 40mph. Kept getting worse, noticed it wasn't shifting higher than second.

So decided to head straight home, didn't make it that far, felt like it was going to die, check engine light came on. Pulled into AutoZone parking lot and there it went dead.

Got those codes, thought maybe i'm lucky and the engine coolant might fix the problem >> i'm not an expert on how transmissions/engines work so really had no idea but code said tranny overheat, coolant low, figured two must be related.

Wife showed up, added fluid went to drive home, nope. Kept it at 1500rmp all the way home any higher and it started acting funny, wouldn't go higher than second and the speedo stopped working.

Pulled Error codes P1684/P1603/P0714/P0218

Reset codes by discon battery, drove about 4 miles to test, engine light came back on speedo not working whole time. Would shift through all (4) i think gears no problem, still had the feint knocking.

Mechanic said it's possible that the tranny wont shift becuase speedo is out, but tranny started having probs before the speedometer started to have them. Speedometer sensor on the transmission? Could it overheating have burned it out? or it going out cause tranny to start acting weird?

Lost at this point.

P1684 does not indicate a problem; it's only a status, which indicates that the PCM memory has been cleared within the last 50 ignition cycles.

P1603: PCM Internal Dual-Port Communication Failure.
Possible Causes Setting Condition:
Fused ignition switch output is missing (off-start-run circuit)
PCM has an internal failure

Did you change your transmission oil lately?

When you changed the transmission oil filter was there any metal shavings at the bottom of the transmission pan?
