Default Transmission?

As I was driving home from work this morning on the interstate, my pt kinda jumped and engine reved to 4000 rpm and felt as though it were in neutral, lost speed and was no longer able to drive in drive, 3rd, or 1st gears. Haven't tried reverse as that would be dangerous. In the past few weeks I've noticed that while stopped at a light or stop sign the car would kinda jump like it was trying to go while I was stopped. It would not do this in park or neutral. And now I sit on the side of the interstate. Please help. 2002 pt cruiser touring edition 139k miles.

My 2003 went out at 120,000. Found a yard replacement for $250.
I dissassembeled the faild and found nothing wrong that I could see. I figure it was the converter or the pump.
Bought it used so I don't know maint history. Have you ever done fluid filter?

I didn't see that you said you couldn't move in 2nd gear. I believe if it does drive in 2nd, your in LIMP MODE and you should be able to drive home or to a shop at a slow pace. That's what LIMP MODE allows you to do until the proper diagnosis is done to find out the real problem.

Did the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) come on at any time so you can pull a fault code? Has the transaxle had regular service throughout the life of the car?

I bought it used at 111480 miles and have done nothing with the transmission and do not know previous maintenance history. How do you get it into 2nd? Shifter goes drive, 3rd, 1st. No lights came on other than the emergency flashers I turned on while pulling off the road.

Looks like my cruising days may have come to an end. Given an estimated repair price of $1500-$1900. Cars book value is only $2000. Don't think it's worth it. Anyone want to buy? Has 4 new tires, new front pads, new hatch lifts, 139k miles needs transmission

I have the same problem. After reading codes, P0740, P0700, I'm inclined to believe it's my trans control computer. No burnt smell in fluid. When it quit, there was no noise, or vibration. At first I believed it to be the pump. With these error codes, I don't think so now. It simply slipped into neutral. Auto computer exchange has the module for $159. Best price I've found. I'm checking all my fuses, relays and connections. If they are solid I think the control module will be my next step. Good luck

I've considered a used transmission from a junk yard, but only have $300 to work with. Even if I could get one under $300 still have to pay for labor. Best bet will probably be to sell/trade in as is and use that plus my $300 as down payment on another vehicle.

$700 vs 3-4-5- years of payments

I picked my used transmission off Craigslist.
Good luck in whatever you decide.
