Thumbs down Cruise control possessed

I've been looking online for 2 weeks now and cannot find anyone who has experienced my problem. I have a 2002 Pt Cruiser, 5-speed. Everything was great and working til recently. My cruise control stopped working, sort of...
It will work if I put the key in run position, turn cruise light on, then start car. If I try to do it the usual way, the light won't come on and the cruise doesn't work. Will only turn off and on while in run position, not while driving... Any ideas???? No codes, unhooking battery didn't help..

That is peculiar.
Cruise uses engine vacuum to work, and there's no vacuum until engine starts - there could be a clue there, but not sure what the clue is...

true the cruise is vacuum controlled, once the computer registers you have turned it on, i guess i should also chime this in, when my engine blew , my cruise had the EXACT same symptom, cruise would only chime in before the car was actually started, after it was started it would not turn on, it was like the computer knew something, but would not give a code or a CEL.

If it only works with certain positions of the switch then I would say start there. Vacuum has nothing to do with the switching. Thats electrical. Could be in the main wire connector in the column. Just a guess.

Think it could be the column ground by chance?

I can't say no, but I would lean towards ignition switch or the wiring going to it. Again just my guess. Just seems funny the switch position is the common denominator. Wiring is not my strong suit.

I would suggest checking the cruise control switch, input speed sensor, output speed sensor, transmission and/or clutch switches, vehicle speed sensor, the vacuum servo and vacuum system that can cause the cruise control and light to shut off. The PCM controls the system for speed control by using these components.

How many miles do you have on it and when was the timing belt replaced if it was?

I just replaced the PCM on my 05. It was a faulty unit. It caused a similar issue with my cruise control. Got another replacement and everything works fine. Something to look int maybe?
