Default LED conversion

Hopefully this is the right place for this...

My 2008 Cruiser occasionally blows out its tail lights. Apparently, water splashes up and gets into the tail lamp and the cool water blows up the hot bulbs. I'm interested in replacing the incandescent bulbs with LEDs.

I expect that the problem will be that the flasher may not blink the turn signals and emergency flasher. On the other hand, the flasher MIGHT be electronic and may not need a load to blink the lights.

Has anybody converted their lights to LEDs? Any tips?

If water is getting to the actual lamps, you should fix the lens first.

Or if water is getting on the pigtails and shorting them out, you should fix that.

Just putting led's in will only temporarily fix the issue.

Cool Re: LED conversion

THIS ^^^^
Sounds like your biggest problem is the tail light assembly is leaking - not sealed!

For what LED bulbs cost, you could (and should) replace your tail light housings with ones that don't leak.

I have a second generation PT and the can-bus electrical system. Adding LED's maybe a problem for the rear lights. You may want to read this earlier post.

Front Turn Signal Lights Turn On and Off When Applying Brake?

Keep in mind, I have added all kinds of LED's to the front, back and interior of my car with no problem but the rear lights brake and tail lights went a bit haywire the LED's.

I believe it had something to do with the low draw from the LED's.

Definitely, get some clear silicone for the tails and make sure the screw is lined up with the clip correctly on the tail light assembly for a snug fit.

Good Luck
Dan

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I did seal the lamps with silicone and that helped a lot and may have (should have) "fixed" the problem but I'm not entirely confident that is as reliable as I'd like. My daughter broke a lamp and the replacement does seem to be sealed better but then I'm not sure I can count on another one as well constructed. Of course, I might be a little paranoid.

The unsaid interest in this is that I've replaced most of my bulbs with LEDs in another char but I need a couple more to finish it and it's not worth the shipping for such a small order! Getting LEDs for the Cruiser could make it worthwhile.

I've been using Superbright (https://www.superbrightleds.com) and then have a listing for LEDs for 2008 Cruisers so I'm assuming they are CAN-BUS compliant. That might be a rash assumption. They also list some flashers to use but I understand that the flashers are 'built in'. Of course, the flasher could be an issue with LEDs, too.

From Danny's link, it sounds like using LEDs is more trouble than they're worth on the Cruiser and making sure the lamps are sealed is the real ticket. Does that sound right?

DON!
But that was my "inferred" point with the post you corrected me on!

Yes!
But again, just replacing bulbs with a Gen 2 could be problematic.
I have 3 of my 4 Cruisers as Gen 2s, that all plug&played without a hitch when I bought the whole tail light assembly.
You may want to consider that if your current plan doesn't work out.
Occassionally, salvaged LED assemblies do show up for sale on several PT forums.....sometime when someone is "parting-out" a PT.
