Default Bad gas mileage, reason?

I drive a 2 liter 2002 model with auto transmission. I always used to get roughly an average of 21 mpg in the city. After doing a cooling system flush a few months ago, I noticed a fairly drastic drop in gas mileage. Now it averages about 17.5 mpg in the city which is quite low I think. the car has only about 35000 miles on the clock. I live in South Africa where the climate change is nowhere near as drastic as the US so I don't think cold weather would be the cause - besides, it is summer now and nothing has improved. My tire pressure is about 38 psi as specified on the label.

Any ideas what usually causes this and where I start looking first?

I notice you have a 2.0 liter engine. I have no experience with 2.0 liter engines but I will ask some general questions that might help you.

Is your coolant temperature taking longer to warm up or is the engine temperature lower than it was before a coolant system flush?

Does your engine idle rough when its cold or up to normal engine temperature?

Was there a reason for doing the coolant system flush?

Are you getting any engine trouble codes?

Are you using the same gas and gas station?

Have you changed how you calculate your gas mileage?

Have you done anything to it since the problem started?

The engine temperature on the gauge runs right in the middle where it always used to, so from that reference I assume that the temperature is the same. As for the actual engine temperature I don't really know. I am not getting any trouble codes at all. As for the gas, I have been using a few different stations, but always the same few. I have been calculating the mileage in the same way. The drop was obvious however, since I was used to getting around 450-500km per tank, and suddenly I started getting no more than about 350km per tank. It was sudden, therefore I noticed it. I haven't done much since the problem started, besides cleaning the throttle body and checking for vacuum leaks.

Try some fuel injector cleaner. Can't hurt even if it doesn't cure it. Like ptcruisersteve, I think it's something disturbed during the flush. Check all hoses and connectors.

Yah! I myself was trying to conjure up what might have been disturbed accidentally at the flush.
Check all hoses, connections, etc., under the hood.
Check the plug(s) and wires too. Meaning, it's a little early maybe, but you might have a fowled plug or two.
Being it's a diesel (I guess), you may want to post on this in the Europe section of the "Regional Forums". There might be someone with more 2.0L experience there on this issue.

Frank, it's not a diesel. 2.0 is petrol (gas), 2.2 was diesel.

Is your coolant level dropping in the reservoir tank?
Are you getting a little white smoke coming out the exhaust pipe?
