No. 6x9 speakers will not fit without substantial modification. There are 5x7 and specially designed 6x8 (really also 5x7) speakers that are advertised to fit.

What I found was that the stock rear speakers (at least up thru 2005) are Chrysler "premium" speakers and sound pretty good with a stock stereo system. But the front speakers were downgraded in 2003 and later PT's. I installed the premium door speakers from a 2001 Limited in my 2005 GT. And they make a WORLD of different. I now feel the music thumping on my leg the way it should be. And the premium speakers are easy to spot. Beside have much larger magnets, they have the word "Premium" stamped on them.

If you search eBay for PT Cruiser speakers, you will find a number of name brand kits that have both front and rear speakers along with the wiring adapters. Personally, I really like the premium Chrysler sound systems. But there are other audiophiles on this forum that can likely clue you in on some of the better choices for aftermarket stuff.

There is a thread on how to install 6.9 I believe from wwpptc?
It can be done either of two ways, a custom adapter or slight cutting of material.

I choose to use Soundstream SST6.9 (full range hz.) looked and measured for cutting, but have not yet installed them.

It does not appear to be a difficult task having done similar installs many times on other vehicles. But it does mean cutting which will mean no longer a stock PT Cruiser.

Another idea instead of 6.9 would be a custom adapter for a single component speaker frequency crossed to fill in the sound you think or like that needs augmenting. This way you get what you need in sound and no cutting of metal.

Here is my unfinished stereo project
