Default really really bad fuel mileage

I have a 2002 cruiser. Has around 99000 miles. I just bought the car. Was expecting around 18-20 mpg. I am only getting around 12 mpg. It's a 2.4 auto.

How many tankfuls are we talking about?
Do you let it warm up before you drive?
Have you checked tire pressure?

Hope timing belt/water pump was changed.

Welcome.

Are you getting any engine trouble codes?
Are you blowing black smoke when you first start it up?
Have you tried some fuel injection cleaner?

Tire pressure is fine. Don't think thinking belt and water pump haven't Been changed. I about 3 tanks. Still same result. There how ever is like a constant diesel ing . No engine code either.

Short trips (less than 5 miles) makes my mileage drop from 18 very quickly.
If its running rough, and you just bought it, it may need at least a tune up and it would be a good time to try to find out if the timing belt was changed or its due (I wouldn't wait to long)( Timing belt gives no warning that its going to break or strip the cogs on the belt). And summer is not far off @ your mileage I would consider a new radiator cooling fan.
Since it has low mileage for a 02 the injectors may need some cleaner, and check your air filter.

well 12 is wrong no matter what kind of driving you do something is not right

id say check the 02 sensor or just replace them at 100,000 that cant hurt
but there is something wrong my 06 n/a auto getts over 20 most days and i drive as hard as most

I dont like throwing parts at a problem but if there are no codes and tires are not running really low you have to start someplace
Maybe have it ran through a good ObII scanner and make sure there are no codes

Red face Re: really really bad fuel mileage

Buying a 2002 Cruiser and "expecting" the mileage on the new car window sticker, is just asking too much; really.
Post some in the "tech" Forum.
And be sure to give a lot of the vehicle maintenance history...especially plugs and wires, air filter, etc.

I get close to 100 miles per 1/4 tank, it averages to 24mpg I also drive up and down the cajon pass which is about a 2600 ft above sea level climb and around 7-8% grade, what I commonly do is reset the mpg at around freeway speeds and give it about 50-60 miles for the computer to get a approximate mpg.
