Default 04 4 speed auto won't shift out of first

My 04 with 135k miles just stopped shifting yesterday am. This was after a damp mild spell followed by extreme cold. Put it in a warm garage for the day and it still won't shift. Any things I can do without large cost? Been a great car from new but I fear a transmission shop visit would surpass the value of the car. Any help on diagnosing would be appreciated.

Pull transmission dipstick - where is the level and what does fluid look like?

Shifter moves fine but no di between 1 and 3 (I cannot manually shift thru to 3rd). The fluid was down a bit but still on stick. I topped it up. No improvement. I do have an error code p0700

What did fluid look like?
P0700 means it's more than linkage...

Fluid looked red, a bit darker than new but did not smell burnt.

What was the mileage on the PT Cruiser when you last change the transmission filter and transmission oil?

Strangest thing. Temp last night went up to 40 with a lot of rain. Took the pt to go to trans shop, and it worked like it was new. It stopped working during a long mild spell in dec. followed by a quick freeze. For now I am ok. Thanks for all your help.
