Default Key phobe battery

Ok, this may seem like a dumb question. Yesterday I was stranded with the PT. I shut the car off, went in the store, came out, click unlocked, key in ignition, car starts and dies, 3 times, then crank no start, then nothing but dash lights. So I pull the key out and hit the unlock button. Nothing! Thinking maybe a key phobe battery dead I go searching for one. Get back to the car, still the same. I disconnect the battery for a couple minutes, nothing. So I get mad and wiggle the bastard thing. Walla! Car starts and runs.

So, was it the phobe? Did it take time for the computer to read it again? Or an ignition switch? If a bad key phobe battery would not cause the car to start I cannot think of a dummer design.

no that's a SKIM issue. the key fob isn't required for the car to run. I'd guess something in the actuator or key cylinder is worn

Almost sounds like a weak battery in the car by the description. Remotes don't work when battery is down. But like rob said. there are a few things that can cause a problem in the ignition.

Hmm. Battery is brand new last summer. Im thinking its ignition switch related. A few weeks ago while driving all the dash lights started flashing

Ignition switch, actuator, or SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module).

The fob (plastic with buttons) has nothing to do with starting the car.
The metal key has a chip in it in the gray plastic - that has to be "read" by the SKIM.
That pushing in on the key worked points to ignition cylinder....
Numerous posts here with folks having to replace them. Not too expensive or hard.

Oh...........thank you. My key and fob are all one piece. I only have one so I have to have the dealer program new ones. It is actually part of the key so I figured it needed power. My friend has a Caravan with same keys. He had two cut and tried to start the car. It did the same thing, started and stalled right out, until he programmed the key. There is no physical connection between the key and the chip.

Ah, your PT is an '06 or later - they went to a single key/fob.

Your friend would not have been able to get it to work by pushing in on key - pushing in on key working indicates ignition switch is on it's way out.
