Default Diagnostic Scan Tool/Code Reader

Been researching. Looking for some opinions on a Diagnostic Scan Tool/Code Reader? Best bang for the buck.

It will give you & clear codes...but I don't consider the UG a scan tool.
I do own & use one though for monitoring.

The Scan Tools I posted above can read the 'Readiness File' which NitroPT says is important because it gives you a little more info on where to look for problem.

I use this one. It's only $15.99 with free shipping from NewEgg

Autel MS300 CAN Diagnostic Scanner Tool with Trouble Codes Reader for OBDII Vehicles - Newegg.com

It will read all Chrysler codes, clear them, and it can review the readiness of a number of sensors. I've used it many times and haven't needed anything more. The professional stuff is great if you need it. But for many PT enthusiasts, those extra features may not justify the price for the tool.

Some of the bluetooth models they have now are equal or better than some professional scanners. They have libraries and advanced diagnostics. Some of them even claim to give you limited abilities to program new keys, fobs and some even claim to allow writing of VIN and tuning information on a few cars models, but not Chryslers from best I can tell. And some are very cheap.

However, when you want to work on a car with a problem, it's a hassle to me to have to pull out a laptop and connect to a bluetooth device if all you want to do is get a trouble code. So in my opinion, a little handheld unit like this is often more useful. And this little unit can stay in my tool bag where it's always handy.

Thanks for the info.
Just not sure if I should spend the extra $ on ABS and airbags

What I also like about the OBD II & CAN Deluxe Scan Tool is that it will give you a better indication of when your PT Cruiser is ready to be smog tested.

Having reviewed and used many scan tools the on board Ultra Gauge is one of the best and also a very nice price point.

The Harbor Freight scan tools are next in line the have diagnostics aids not mentioned and may become useful at some point in the future. Also they are still small enough that you can carry with you in your travels.

I do not care for PC or Android programs yet. They are IMO still in the beginning stages of usefulness. I have one that I use in my Samsung but it is more trouble then me simply plugging the scan tool from Harbor Freight.

For owners loving in smog complaint states being able to read and "RESET" the readiness file is important in diagnostic tuning.

As an ASE Master Technician I also share/own a Snap On SOLUS scan tool which cost almost $3500. But since using the Harbor Freight cheappies I seldom in the last 3 years needed to pull out the Snap on Scan Tool.

My Diagnostic carry on case....All the essentials, GPS,DST,and Scan Tool.
I have the DST for PCM calibration and DATA logging for ever changing driving conditions. GPS to save the marriage. And the Scan tool to check any anomalies in the running condition and also to help friends with Diagnostic solutions. The gloves because they are just "KOOL"!

I agree it is fantastic value and now the new Plus version of the Ultra Gauge also has the readiness monitors as well, so it is even better then before! I saw Nitro's when I first joined and finally bought one a couple of months ago!
