I just ordered the Magnecor KV85 (MAG45428) wires. I will be picking up a set of Champion double platinum (#7440) plugs today. What seals are required when removing the intake runners to change plugs and wires? OR do the seals need to be changed? I know... stupid question, but it had to be asked.
I already have a cold air intake and free flowing Magnaflow muffler.

No stupid questions -
No Seals.
Good choices - don't forget to gap the plugs (0.050") use anti-seize on plug threads, and dielectric grease on the plug boot.

I was always taught never to try and gap platinum plugs because it will remove the platinum from the electrodes. I still check the gaps, but very carefully.
Has anyone tried split fire plugs?

Don't know of any for the PT - the plug has a tapered seat. I mentioned gap, because the set I bought were off quite a bit - only 1 was right.

It turns out that the correct Champion dual platinum plugs for a 2003 non-turbo 2.4L PT Cruiser are #7570, available through spakeplugs.com at $5.23 each. I just ordered mine and they are on the way. So, I will be replacing the stock coil with a screamin demon coil, stock wires out the door, replaced by a set of Magnecor KV85's, and the double platinum Champion 7570's. Screamin demon recommends gapping the plugs at .065". Stock is .050". Any thoughts on plug gaps with a higher output coil?

Thanks,
Scott Harris snakepitt1@aol.com

First, yea, any of the high output coils recommend a higher gap, mainly because the higher voltage spark that they put out can breach the larger space and I believe it will let the plug last longer.

Second...where did you get the info on the Champion Plug number? We have been using #7440 for the Double Platinum plugs. In fact I just got an extra set in the mail this morning (paid for 4, got a box of 6). I've never heard of the #7570 plugs for the PT non-turbo. Sci-Fi / MX-5 any thoughts ????

Thats been conformed by MX-5:

http://ptenthusiasts.org/PTForums/sh...highlight=7570

Pictures of the differences are in that post (smaller and shorter tip, a hotter plug?).

Just FYI: a few buddies experimented a bit with their N/A engines and have set the SP gap smaller at .040-.045 instead of .050 and have reported that the slight first gear hesitation on acceleration from a stop is eliminated. Don't know how or if it affects or changes emissions. Guess we'll find out when they go in for smog testing. YMMV

Forgot to add this question for snakepitt1, if you were having a spark problem with the stock coil at the stock SP gap, why would you buy a high output coil and increase the SP gap? [:I]

The stock coil already failed once with less than 5000 miles on the car. It was replaced under warranty. I'm starting to feel the same miss I felt before when the last stock coil started acting up. I would rather replace the coil with something better when I'm replacing the stock wires and plugs. I could take the car back again and sit in the waiting room for 2 or 3 hours while they replace the coil a second time, or I could just go for the best that's presently out there. The manufacturer recommends .065" gap with this coil. Should I adhere to that, or, should I go with some amount less than this to eliminate the off idle, first gear stumble mentioned in this thread?

Snake, this may be a dumb question, but was your car waxed? At the higher speeds a slippery car would go faster and a PT needs all the aerodynamic help it can get. Also, did you take out the rear seats or have ground effects on your car?

IMHO, stay with the stock gap or go slightly smaller (.045) regardless of what coil pack you have installed. Personally I haven't seen many stock coil packs fail, but anything can and will happen. Most of the time the connectors are the problem (coil or SP wire terminals). There may be other causes like a bad injector, but for now the conversation is about the coil, SP wires and spark plugs.

I am currently running the screamin demon Hi output coil, magnecor 10mm plug wires, and Champion single platinum #3032 (RE1010PMC5) one heat range colder than the stock plugs. Sci-Fi is right about the gap. I went down to .042 on the gap, because @.50 I would get an intermittent miss at high RPM. It runs better @ .042, and i have a GT turbo with a dual stage boost controller (stage 2 boost set at 15lbs). I have been running this setup for more than 1 year without any problems at all......
