timing belt broke

On the way to work this morning, my '07 base just died along the highway.
Got it towed to a mechanic friend, and the timing belt is broken...hope this isn't going to cost an arm and a leg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Depending on where you live and mechanic, between $500 - $1,500.
$1,000 is an average ballpark number.

The one thing you need to knwo is this


The PT 2.4 is a NON INTERFERANCE MOTOR no matter what any mechanic tell you the pistons can NOT HIT THE VALVUES NON INTERFERANCE you will not need a new motor and yes to the $750-$1200 for a timing belt water pump and tensioners

It's a non interference engine far as Pistons hitting valves. Lots of ho to info on here if he wants to familiarize himself with it. If he has never done one.

You are NOT lucky. That is the lowest mileage I've heard of for a belt to break.
I did hear of one at around 80,000. It is recommended to change belt at 100,000 miles.
Did you buy the car used?

yes, bought it used, just about a month ago. My Civic owners manual said 100,000 miles and a buddy informed me that it also says 7 years. We were at 85,000 miles and 9 years, so had it done. The guy who did it has the PT now, and he was like $200 less than other places, but $500 less than the dealership.
I will have an idea on the cost tomorrow. It's too much for me to try on my own.

My 2005 had cracks on inspection last week.
But, who does an occassional inspection of the belt!!!
And, my mileage on the 2005 is only 40K!
Age an environmental conditions are just as big a factor.

Well,I did last summer @ around 70,000 miles. When we bought the car there were some other things wrong with it like the air conditioning did not work and the radiator sprung a leak. When that happened the car over heated pretty badly.

I decided I should check the timing belt but it looked like new to me. NO cracks and the numbers printed on it still looked like new.

I think the previous owner might have done the job shortly before he traded it in.

can the valves still be bent? that's what I'm being told from the repair shop?
