Default I hear a noise coming from a

Hi there,

Well first of all thank you very much for your help.

I drive a PT Cruiser 2004 with 140K miles. When I turn the engine on, I can hear a noise that many people have identified as a "belt". After a few minutes, I don't hear the noise anymore, I'm guessing because the belt warmed up.

I have two questions if you don't mind. I'm not sure how many belts the PT Cruiser has. I've been told it could either be the AC belt or the timing belt. What could it be?

And my other question is - is this critical? Is it risky to drive like this?

Thank You!

I would suggest checking your serpentine and alternator belts. The link below might help you diagnose the problem.

You can open the hood and see if you can locate where the noise might be coming from.

There is no serpentine belt is there? I thought there was two belts. One for the AC and one for the alternator. Then of course the timing belt.

The factory manual says there is a serpentine belt driving the power steering pump & air conditioning compressor.

Rockauto.com says for 2004 PT Cruiser
Serpentine Belt; RIB ACE PRECISION ENGINEERED V-RIBBED BELT - ALT - INCH NUMBER: 345K4

I might say serpentine belt...but to me a serpentine belt is just 1 long belt that attaches to every pulley in a car.

There is a serpentine belt that runs the AC and power steering pump with a tensioner. Then there is a separate belt that runs the alternator and it is tensioned via the alternator. Sorry for the confusion.

Alternator belt on the left. Serpentine belt on the right.

Now that the number and types of belts have been posted.
The belt driving the alternator is known to act this way if the belt is worn or not tight enough.
When you start the car the battery, the alternator tries to recharge causing a high load on the belt.
As the battery recovers, the load on the belt reduces and the squeal subsides.

The timing belt has teeth/cogs so it doesn't/can't slip/squeal.

If it was the Serpentine belt, then it would be with the AC or Power steering that would cause the noise.
