I have a 2002 pt cruiser that will not start. Have replaced battery, starter, starter relay switch, and cable going from starter to battery. When key is turned it sometimes makes a continuous clicking noise, and sometimes a clanking noise. Sometimes when the key is first turned to on position you hear the clicking without having engaged the starter. There is no check engine light so dont have a code. Any suggestions as to what I should try next?

Have you located where the clicking/clanking sound is coming from? Has there been anything else repaired lately on the PT Cruiser? Last edited by ptcruisersteve; 12 Jul 2015 at 06:56 pm. |

Yes, we cleaned the ground and replaced the cable clamp to battery. Sounds appears to be coming from the starter soleinod. No recent work.

Do you have a voltmeter? If you do post what the voltage is when you try starting the PT Cruiser.
If you don't have a voltmeter turn on the headlights and try starting the PT Cruiser. Does the headlights dim? I would also suggest checking the battery cables. Other members have had problems with the battery cables being bad. Where was the starter purchased? Other members have gotten bad rebuilt starters and had to return up to 3 bad rebuilt starters before getting a good one. I plan to get a new starter from the dealer the next time the starter in one of my PT Cruisers fail. |

Voltage drops down to about 10 1/2

If you have a battery charger I would suggest recharging the battery until you have a full charge. What is the battery voltage before trying to start the PT Cruiser?

Brand new battery can still not be fully charged.
If you don't have a battery charger then try jump starting the PT Cruiser with another vehicle. We need to verify battery is good. We need to make sure battery has enough amperage to get the starter going. |

Battery is fully charged and has been load tested.

Also just had started tested. Passed and engaged.
