Exclamation limp mode questions...

Hello fellow pt cruisers. I purchased a 2006 basic pt cruiser for my 16 yr old daughters 16th birthday....her very first car. and low and behold, 1 week later it goes into limp mode. my sister has done extensive research on the matter and I have questions of my own. using car MD, the codes were P0700, 0882 and 1603. I have not found what the 1603 is thus far. but of course the check engine light came on when this happened. I have taken it to the shop thinking it needed further diagnostics but now I am being told that maybe I should try some things before letting them go free for all on the car. when this happened, I checked the transmission fluid and it was 1/2 qt low. I put in fluid. at the time, I noticed that it had new fluid in it. I asked the dealer had they serviced the transmission and he said no (of course). So, here is what I've heard: if the proper type fluid was not put in, it could've caused this and can also cause serious tranny problems in the future, so I was told to have the fluid drained out and refilled with the proper fluid and to reset or wipe out the codes and that this would take it out of this mode. then if the problem happens again, at least I will know it is not due to the wrong fluid or low fluid causing the problem and then possibly the 'tcm, pcm' whichever is correct. does any of this sound right to anyone? I am disabled, on a fixed income and spent every dime I had on getting her a car. I simply cannot afford to just throw money at the car without knowing I am replacing the right parts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance..., Sugar

There are a LOT of Mopars in junkyards with bad transmissions because people put the wrong fluid in them. MOPAR ATF+4 only! Dexron with an additive, type F will kill them. I actually argued with a guy at a trans shop about a 94 New Yorker I had. He said he'd do a change with Dexron with an additive and I told him "Oh, hell no you won't. Not on MY car." I even offered to go purchase the MOPAR fluid and he refused. So, I took it home, got a filter and a case of Mopar ATF+4 and did it myself. That took care of the problem I was having. As a side note, I noticed this shop had several Mopars sitting around waiting for service. I felt sorry for the owners.

Use of other than the correct fluid (ATF+4) WILL cause transmission problems including causing it to go into limp mode. At this point, without knowing what fluid is in the transmission, you have no choice but to flush all of the fluid out of the trans and replace it with ATF+4. This MAY solve the problem if the transmission has not been damaged by the wrong fluid or just plain wear and tear (don't know how many miles on your '06).

Amzoil synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid

Change the fluid and filter at least at 50K miles intervals and a complete fluid replacement or properly performed flushing and filter fluid replacement at 100k miles.

IMO based on changing a few on customers PT the solenoid pack is a preventive maintenance part and should be changed at least at if not before the 100kmiles odometer reading.

If there is suspected transmission internal damage concern have the oil analyzed

Also I would recommend purchaseing a trans pan with a drain plug, bought a DORMAN trans pan from rock auto, A good investment and makes draining trans fluid alot easier and not as messey. Also if you change the filter be carefull a gush of fluid will stream out if you don't know by now. hope this may help some.
