Default Timing Belt Tensioner Help

Hey guys!

I'm a long time home-garage mechanic, 12 years experience working on various makes and models. A friend of mine had his water pump go out in his 2001 Cruiser and I mistakenly told him I would tackle the job. Good lord that giant bracket was a pain in the ass. I'm a bit stumped with the tensioner that came with my timing belt kit. I've read all about the tensioner upgrade from this style...

To this style...

However, it seems as if he had the new style tensioner but not the new bracket. Take a look at what came off of the car and what came with my kit...

Old Tensioner vs. New Tensioner

Absence of Bracket (I can take the timing cover off if needed, but it's not there)

Do I need to get that bracket? It looks like I do. The contact points between the bracket and the tensioner body (that resists pressure from the spring, putting tension on the belt), are lower on the new tensioner. This leads me to believe that I need the bracket. But then again maybe the back portion of the tensioner (that would contact the tab on the factory "bracket") that is built into the block is what resists spring pressure.

Thanks in advance for all the help!
