Question horrible rattling while in D and brake applied

Help!!! I just dumped $1000 into my 2002 TE PT Auto now I'm having a new issue. While in drive and the brake is applied I hear a horrible rattling noise. I feel like the car has been somewhat sluggish before this new noise started. This summer I had overheating issues and replaced radiator, heater core, thermostat, water pump, and timing belt. Could this be the catalytic converter?? Any ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated. I don't have the money to keep dumping into this pt, but its my daily driver

The first thing you need to do is run the codes on it and post them here. While you wait for replies, get your rubber mallet or hammer, get up under it and tap the cat con. If you hear rattling, odds are it's clogged and needs replacing. If you're too fat or lazy (like me), crank it up and put your hand near the tail pipe and feel the exhaust. Does it have good pressure or not? If not, it could still be the cat con. If it feels good, then you have a problem somewhere else. Too many possibilities without more info.

you need to have someone step on the brake in drive and listen for it. it's probably a heat shield and it'll probably stop rattling when you touch it with a broomstick or something similar. there is one over the exhaust manifold and several leading towards the back of the car. if it's loud and annoying, it should be stupidly easy to find.

don't bang on anything.

And it could be the engine is shifting because you've got a busted motor mount or two. Bang the hell out of the cat con and the heat shields!

What is "cat con" jargon for? (I assume catalytic converter?)

why would you recommend anyone bang on something that contains a fragile clay honeycomb inside?

-you wonder why your car never runs right? here:

usually the P0401 code will return randomly( after a day, a week, etc) when the EGR transducer starts to fail. when mine failed it did not have any effect on performance, it just turned the idiot light on. you can clean and inspect the EGR valve, likely you will see it seems fine and moves smoothly. I just replaced just the EGR transducer on mine to save money. usually people buy the whole assembly, but i didnt. this fixed my problem and saved money in the process. it only takes 5 minutes to change this. IIRC it is only held in by a clip, a connector, and a couple vacuum lines.[/QUOTE]

the rattling is probably separate.. a rusty shield somewhere

Where can you get just the tranducer, Rob? Back in TN, none of the parts stores offered them separately. You had to buy the whole EGR valve and transducer together. Bunch of crooks! I haven't checked this since the move to hell, I mean Florida.
