Default Can The Harmonic Balancer be Over tightened?

Hello all!

I'm trying to finish up a timing belt replacement.

As I was torquing the Crank (Harmonic Balancer) Pulley bolt, I got a click at 100 ft/lbs. The bolt turned several more times before it consistently clicked at 100 ft/lbs.

However, the balancer is too close to the block now.

Has this happened to anyone else before?

Thanks in advance!

looks to me that it is not on far enough. the alternator should be farther back, and the outer ribs of the pulley should line up with all the other junk. AC/PS/etc.

-is it possible you pulled the outer part off the center hub?
-when you removed the pulley did you pull it from the three center holes, or the outer ribs?
-before you torqued it did you make sure the crank shout and center of pulley were 100% clean and free of burrs?
-before you torqued it did you lubricate the threads and also under the head of the bolt?

+1

The position of the lower cam sprocket needs to be measured. However, the harmonic balancer has a shoulder where the bolt goes in. This shoulder should fit tight against the end of the cranks. Thus, it should not be able to go in too deep. And once that shoulder is against the end of the crank, no amount of force on the cranks bolt should make the balancer go deeper.

To see if you are still out too far, as Rob suggests, remove the bolt and see if that shoulder is against the end of the crank. If there is a space, it's not on far enough. If the shoulder is against the crank, you need to check that you haven't pulled the balancer apart as Rob suggested.

There's one more issue specific to the crank on a 2007 NA PT. But let's not go there yet....

-- I guess it's possible. I will check

-- The three holes with a rental tool
-before you torqued it did you make sure the crank shout and center of pulley were 100% clean and free of burrs?
-- it was cleaned but I didn't check for burrs
-before you torqued it did you lubricate the threads and also under the head of the bolt?
-- No. I did not lubricate the threads or head. I just put thread locker on it

Thanks for the help!

I did not press the harmonic balancer on, nor did I use an impact. I used a wrench to hold it against the frame and tightened it down with a breaker bar. I then torqued it down with a torque wrench.

I removed it to try again.

Is it OK? Do I need a new one?

Do I need to torque it down differently?

I'm not sure if I need a new harmonic balancer or not. I posted pics but they have to get approved by a moderator

Yep! That was the problem. Old balancer is installed and now the car is running!

Thanks everyone!
