Default Motor Mounts ?

At 65k miles, I thought it time to change out my upper and lower motor mounts. I ordered both from RockAuto, and got really fast shipping. The top mount is a simple driveway job, and went well (question, on the front of the stock old mount, there is a small 1"x1" metal tab with 2 screws holding it to the mount. It doesn't do a thing, but I was wondering why it's there). Is the bottom mount a driveway job too ? Can I just jack up and remove the wheel, and take off the cover to get to it, or do I have to jack up the engine too ?

That "little metal tab" does do something, it helps with engine vibration.

I don't understand.....the lower mount also has one. How can they help with vibration?

Default Torque struts on a 2009 Base model

The lower torque strut is also a driveway job but a little more involved in that you have to remove the splash guards which are held on with sheet metal screws and those infernal push tabs that love to break off when you remove them.

You also need to use a floor jack to lift the front side of the engine very slightly to get the 119mm measurement spacing on the top strut before tightening all the bolts. Otherwise you are torquing the engine at rest and the bushings will wear out sooner.

Several Youtube videos will show how easy it is to replace the lower torque strut, but I don't think any of them bother to adjust the spacing.

Here are pictures showing how to support the engine and the 119mm spacing measurement between the top strut 2nd front bolt and the first hole on the black bracket for the top strut rear bolt.

Thanks VERY much for the info and pics. I now feel more comfortable doing the job. I still don't understand what the little piece screwed onto the upper and lower mounts, have to do with vibration #$%$#.

I'd say it has to do with changing the center of gravity. Changing the center of gravity would reduce vibration. I just bought duralast. I swapped the plate over on the top, but the bottom OEM did not have a plate. Instead, the frame extended beyond. Unfortunately, the durlast did not have the counter weight built in. The mount itself, basically ended at the mount. In other words the mounts where the same distance, but the arm itself was longer on the OEM.
