Default Blown headgasket

Pretty sure the head is blown. First 2 garages said it isn't, but took it to a friend who has returned finally from holiday who is convinced it is. test is tomorrow.

if it is though, is it worth putting a new one in?

What else should I get done if it is?

Timing belt, water pump?

I am actually upset by all this. I take good care of the car and worked hard on it from when I bought it and now this.

Any idea on costs too for the UK?

You really gave no information why you are " pretty sure" it is a head gasket?

And even if you did you can only........

.......wait until your friend does a complete cooling system check followed up be a compression and cylinder leak down test before you get so :down"?

Cheers...friend!!!!

In April
You had the head gasket checked and it is A okay in April.
Checked to make sure air was not trapped in the coolant system.

In May
Radiator fan replaced.
Engine temperature sensor replaced.
Found radiator cap not working properly and replaced it.

2 days ago took it in to have it repaired.
What happened?

Took it in 2 days ago, and having a mechanic I trust look at it. He was away for a few months in France.

Since it is the bank holiday here, it means tomorrow he will test it to see about the headgasket.

Garages here are really unreliable and when it comes to pt cruisers, either the garages won;t touch it or they are not familiar.

Kwik fit I took it too first, since they are a national company, and they stated head gasket was fine in April leaving us all looking for another cause of the over heating issues with symptoms of bubbling etc .

My friend who just returned took one look at it and stated it looks like a headgasket has blown and has been for some time, but is double checking it tomorrow. he had the radiator cap off and the water was shooting out like a geyser and frothing and going up and down etc.

Fingers crossed it isn't to be honest. if it is though, is the car a right off, or is it worth a repair?

Well. It is now confirmed the headgasket has blown. Been quoted 750 to replace and for also the timing belt and water pump etc to be done.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the cap. It was just releasing pressure over the rating. He had the same problem with 2 or 3 caps. With a head gasket problem pressure can be plenty high. When he said the water shot out like a geyser I was pretty sure that our fears regarding the head gasket were true. With mine it would just kind of bubble over when the thermostat opened - maybe 2-4" over the cap, and people were afraid it was the head gasket.

Sorry to hear that. You should be good for a long time once you have that work done. If there are no rust issues or anything like that with the car you should be good to go.

Looking at the picture of the car and reading your commitment to maintenance I would say your car is a keeper.

I would keep it after replacing the head gasket yourself. You will save a bundle of money that can be put towards quality parts and a feeling that you did it yourself and did it right.

Not a bad price (about $1090).

Given they are doing all the timing belt stuff and water pump too and knowing these jobs along with headgasket are all labour intensive i thought it was a reasonable quote. Nothing else wrong with the car. Timing belt was already going to be done at some poibt this year anyway.

I love the car so much.

They think the headgasket was on its way out after one of the hose valves broke and caused the car to overheat a while back. Given they have all been replaced ihave fingers crossed i was just unlucky at the time.

I am thinking positive. Way i look at it is i could buy another car and end up with one with nore issues. Least with this one i know what needs doing or has been done.

When I had the headgasket replaced in mine the shop sent the cylinder head off to get machined and made sure it was not warped. Not sure if this is something you may want to check on.
