Default 2008 chrysler pt cruiser oxygen sensor

Hello All, I have a 2008 Chrysler pt cruiser with an engine light that came on. advanced auto said it was an oxygen sensor. after 2 days the light went off. I took it to my mechanic who had to order the part from Chrysler. he cleaned it in the meantime and said to drive it to see what happens. he said it had a lot of carbon buildup. what would cause this? 160,000 miles and it had a new catalytic converter put on a year and a half ago. thx.

Your lucky that either 02 sensor lasted as long as they did. Replace both, not too expensive even if you have someone else do it. It will probably increase your gas mileage enough to pay for itself.

Well, thanks to "CREWZIN" for planting the seed

I ordered 2 new MOPAR O2 sensors from RockAuto for $50.79/ea where a dealer wants $102/ea. Then I found a locally owned repair shop that has ASE mechanics that will replace both sensors for $71, a Goodyear shop wants $145 for the same labor. But for the one shop to replace them for $71 I can't mess around with that. I don't have a sensor socket so I would have to either buy or rent one, then I would have to dig out my jack and jack stands and then try to find a place outside my apartment complex where I could get under the car. So for $71, let the shop worry about.

I hope to recoup this expense with increased MPG, we'll see

If you trust them completely, that's good, if in doubt ask to have the old ones back and say you wanted to see how bad they are/look or maybe make a mark on the old sensors to make sure they were changed.

Me too, man. I just don't trust people anymore. Call me cynical if you want to. I don't care.
