Default 01 power steering pulley alignment

Hey guys,

The cruiser I'm just about finished with has one last issue I can hear.

After i had it all together again after a T belt change, I heard a belt noise. I noticed the belt riding half way off the power steering pully.

I retorqued the harmonic balancer on again. It might have moved a hair. Now the belt stays on the power steering a pully. But I get some noise on start up. I've read the pulleys need to be realigned. Basically just pulled flush on the shaft.

Anyone have some advise on how to do this easily? What puller do I need to use? A special one?

Lastly, I changed the tensioner wheel. There's no wrong way to,put that on right? Maybe that's pulling it off? I don't think so but figured I'd ask.

Thanks.

I have not insured the car yet. But I'm digging it. Planning to drive it from fl to ct next month.

You have to make sure the crank pulley/harmonic balancer is seated correctly.

I am certain the harmonic balancer is seated.

Did you take a reference measurement before you pulled the pulley off?

No.

I never touched the gear. Just the harmonic balancer. As I understand it. The HB can possibly by not on far enough. I think it tightens right up against the crank end. I used an electric impact to put it on. Then a phnumatic impact. Then the same impact with larger diameter hose for more power. It's on tight.

Today I worked on it.

Pulled the headlight. Progressively pulled the pulley out Antony bit at a time. Also starting the car to see if chirp was gone. Chirp never went away.

My time is valuable to me. So I went and got a brand new idler pulley assembly. Installed it. But pulled the pulley off to do it.

Having issues gettin it pressed back on. Haha

But I think I'll get a new belt again to for it to be new. I hope I can get rid of this noise.

Maybe I'll put it on the lift to see better the alignment,

Sucks. Any advise.

Finished today.

Trick was to keep the pulley from rotating to press it back on.

I got a new belt as well. Put it all together and no noise at all. I'm happy, I think it was a bad tensioner.

Just worked all night on my 2003 pt basic, can you adjust the pulley on the power steering? Everything is so tight.

I have the half on belt on the pulley too, just replaced the idler pulley assembly and new belt. I thought it would do the trick!!! o No Such Luck.

I will try tightening the harmonic balancer to see if that helps. Need the car tomorrow. Could be a real all nighter!

Any help would be great.

Well PTloser32805... You did it! I finally went out again, dropped the car down and started tightening the harmonic balancer. It must have gone 10 turns! I'm surprised it didn't come off while I was driving.

For the first time in at least 5 years, there are no squeaks or chirps, at all! Replaced the idler pulley (complete assembly) and the belt with no results, but after tightening the harmonic balancer the belt rides right in the middle of the idler pulley and is right in the grove on the power steering.

Thanks again for the help. Even my best mechanic had no idea how to fix this problem. It's nearing 1 am and I am finally going to bed.

Thanks again!!

Scott
