Default Transmission Vibrating, Slipping

For a long time (4 years) this car has had a noticeable vibration at idle, usually after putting it into gear. The vibration would sometimes become more of a throb/shake when changing gears like when doing a 3-point turn. Took it to repair shops and they usually said it must be an engine mount, though that never solved the problem.

Now today, for the first time, the shake caused the car to die out. It dies out easily when I'm changing gears. It also seems to slip out of gear briefly as I drive down the road, but then usually comes back. And even when I just let it idle in park, the RPM dips down every few seconds.

Any guess as to what's wrong?

G'day MarriedToIt! I sympathized with your name, cars are like a marriage. Beautiful but require much effort

A few things come to mind, motor mounts is one. There are three passenger side engine mounts; upper, center and lower. There is also a transmission mount on the driver's side, which may have been missed. Do you know exactly which were changed?

Automatic transmissions require a little more love and patience than manual. Make sure you aren't being hasty with your gears, you must come to a complete stop before shifting from forward to reverse, and vice versa. It's also recommended to, at a stop, shift into neutral instead of leaving it in drive.

Assuming the oil is changed at regular intervals, the spark plugs and ignition coil are operative, and it isn't an 'engine' problem per say, it certainly sounds like a transmission issue, especially since you mention the stalling is relating to gear changes.

From reading your first response...

Most likely you have been driving on mounts that need to be replaced? You may have even broken the lower passenger mount. That mount will be costly to replace.

As for transmission issues I suggest to take your PT to a transmission specialty shop and get a standard filter and fluid service and have them check for transmission trouble codes.

Most owners of PT Cruiser do not have the experience with solving transmission issues and can easily make the condition worse by continued use.

You might have two problems.

Is your engine light on? If so you can take it to an auto part store and get the engine trouble codes for free. You still need to take it to a transmission specialist as NitroPT posted but we need to make sure there are not more than one problem going on. The OBDII Scan Tool will not recognize the specific transmission codes only the generic transmission codes.
