Default AC Confusion

So my Folks have 2006 PT cruiser and brought it over to me because the ac wasn't working.

So since its a 2006 my first thought was a recharge so I recharged the system and still nothing. Warm air. So I tried the following.

Checked to see if fan was working let it get to temp put the ac on and no fan, I took out the relay and put a switch in its place to make sure the fan was indeed working. It was i hit the switch and the fan came on, still no cold air. Then I tried the high speed relay and that will not come on. So my first thought is the fan.

I was not convinced its the fan seeing as how it does work so I jumped the low pressure switch, the cold side gets ice cold but the hot side stays normal and no cold air.

I'm at a loss I dont want to just start buying parts and throwing parts at it till its fixed. The compressor does start but only stays on for 10 second intervals so something isn't right. Anyone have any ideas. I dont wanna buy a new fan and that doesn't fix it.

I would suggest you focus on the radiator fan. A high percentage of the time the radiator fan is the problem so it would be a good idea to manually apply 12volts to the low speed and high speed. If one of them does not work replace the radiator fan. If you choose to check other components first you might replace unnecessary parts that you didn't need to.
chuzz and rsrocket1 like this.
