Default Instrument Panel Losing Power Then Car Cutting Out

Every now and then when driving the instrument panel on the car starts to go crazy. The needles all go to zero and start moving up and down and all the warning lights start to flash. Sometimes the engine also just cuts out and the car turns itself off. At high speeds the car restarts itself but when going slowly you have to actually turn the key for it to get running again but sometimes it doesn't start straight away. I have checked for error codes and done the dashboard test thing. Does anyone know of any solutions to this problem?

Usually this is an ignition switch and/or actuator switch problem.

Why don't you tell us what year your PT is and whether or not it's a turbo? A proper introduction would help.

In order to help you figure out the problem more information is needed.

What error codes came up?

Have you had lots of keys on the key ring?

What year?

I went through this exact experience several months back with my PT. Not saying my solution will fix your problems, as it was not the case for some other posts i have read. For me, my battery terminals were nasty and my battery was over 5 years old, so I pulled the trigger and replaced the battery and cleaned the terminals. The problem hasn't returned. Having said that, a bad battery or corroded terminals will cause this problem. If i were you, I would start with cleaning the terminals and have the battery load tested at a auto parts store (this is free service). Best wishes!
