Default 2003 Pt Cruiser White Smoke and whistling noises

Hello I'm posting this for my mom. We were going on vacation and driving then looked back and saw white smoke and it wasn't a lot so we didn't really think much of it. but then we stopped to get gas and started the car up and it came back. Then we started getting concerned and reluctantly kept going because at this point we were closer to our destination then home aby we were in the middle of nowhere. About 50 miles down the way it started making a whistling noises but we just thought it was wind but it kept getting louder and louder then we decided to pull over. We stopped about ten miles later (nearest exit) before we shut the car off the lights started flickering. Restarted the car and it had absolutely no power. Also it was struggling going up hills. Not bad though.
Before we left we had the oil changed and air filter changed. Thanks for all the help

G'day David, welcome to the forum!

The colour of the smoke usually hints at the cause. If the engine is cold, white smoke on start up which goes away is condensation, no worries. If it still spews white smoke when warm, there could be a radiator leak and/or a blown head gasket which is allowing coolant into the cylinder block.

Either way, check your coolant and see if it's low. When was the coolant last changed? Does the cruiser idle roughly or misfire? Not sure about your other issues and whether they're connected.

Yeah, there's an easy way to tell. Remove the radiator cap and see what color the coolant is. If it looks like a milkshake, then you've got a blown head gasket, most likely. You can also remove the oil filler cap and look for the milkshake color or even remove the oil dipstick and look at it. Maybe the PCV valve is clogged. As for loss of power up hills, your cat con could be stopped up. You need to get someone that KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING, take a look at it. Obviously, you don't.

Aspire to inspire before you expire.
