Default Radiator Fan Issues Part 2

So I posted earlier that I just got a used 06 pt and the fan relays had been relocated. I think the mounting bracket had broke so he pulled the relays to the other side of the radiator and wire tied them in place. I had a bad relay, replaced and all is good.

Except that the relay has gone again, or maybe it was the other one. To be safe I had replaced them both. So I took them both back to AZ and they exchanged them. I placed them back in and when I run the car I can hear a faint clicking coming from one of the relays. After a bit it seems to get hot.

So I swapped the relays and the clicking continued from the same socket. So I do not think it is the relay. But I do not know what it is from. Any ideas on what could be causing this? I am assuming that is what is causing the relays to burn out.

It may be the short section of wiring harness to the relays. Check the connector on the other end where it connects with the main harness, see if that connector isn't partially melted. On my PT, that connector was melted, the last time they replaced the fan. You can get a new section of harness, but only with a new fan. If you need a new section, you may be able find one at a you-pull-it yard. In any case, you should try to fix the issue and get the relays back to their original location.

It could be that the low or high speed brushes are bad...meaning that the 2 speed fan only has 1 working speed.

There is a good possibility the radiator fan relay is clicking caused by low voltage. Chances are you have a short in the radiator fan circuit pulling the voltage down. One of the wiring in the radiator fan motor might have high resistance causing the voltage to pull down. If I was in your shoes I would just replace the radiator fan. I have a brand new one in the garage in case I have any doubts in either one of my Pt Cruisers. I prefer a peace of mind knowing that with a new radiator fan I have a good chance of keeping the engine cool.

If you do replace the fan assy, you should get the one that includes the relays and wiring harness, it's not that much more from the bare fan, and your wiring harness has already been hacked up, so the replacement would fix that issue, too.

Thanks for all the replies.
I could not find a replacement radiator with the wire harness locally.
I did get a new fan from AZ.
I removed the wire harness and examined it, there is no signs of wear.
The new fan is still clicking the relays.

What else could it be?

Is the clicking coming from the low speed or high speed relay?

Where did you get the new radiator fan?

I would test both hi and low fans using jumper wires from the battery with an inline amp meter to see what the fans are drawing. It sure sounds like something is wrong with the fans causing a high amp draw.
